Title: Nobody Need Wait A Single Moment
Jewish New Year 5754, 1994
In this silkscreen, artist Erika Rothenberg depicts a mountain of watches beside a quote by Anne Frank, "Nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world." The watches symbolize the possessions collected by the Nazis from deported Jews. Juxtaposed with Anne Frank's optimisim, this image is infused with hope and inspiration.
Rothenberg's art deals with current, worldwide news. Her work takes many forms - from paintings, drawings and prints - to museum installations and large-scale public sculpture. She uses the strategies of advertising in order to engage in an open critique of society's ills.
Rothenberg's work has been exhibited in numerous institutions, including: New York's Museum of Modern Art; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; The Art Institute of Chicago and Chicago's Museum of Contemporary Art. Her works are also in many public and private collections, and have also been shown internationally.
This lithograph was created as part of a special graphics program by Vera List exclusively for The Jewish Museum.
