Postcard: Sampler (Lenore Oremland) by Elaine Reichek
Featured on this postcard is Sampler (Lenore Oremland) by Elaine Reichek, which is included in the Jewish Museum's collection and currently on view.
In Reichek's hand-embroidered samplers, she employs the craft of sewing while incorporating terse and sometimes humorous quotations that confront her complex Jewish identity. Reichek imbues this historically female practice with a critical voice that such articles of domesticity traditionally suppressed. On this sampler is the quote "As a child I fell off the merry-go-round at Coney Island. My parents were very disappointed. They knew I'd never be part of the horsy set.- Lenore Oremland".
