Postcard: Sampler (H.R.) by Elaine Reichek
Price $2.00Members $1.80
Reproduced on this postcard is Sampler (H.R.), from A Post Colonial Kinderhood, 1993, by Elaine Reichek.
In 1993, the Jewish Museum commissioned Reichek to create an installation that explored her personal identity. A Post Colonial Kinderhood, installed in 1994, probed the fears and embarrassments - real or imagined - that still prevail among many American Jews. Reichek began using needlework in her cultural explorations and included samplers in the installation, which reimagined her 1950s Brooklyn childhood bedroom as the work's central metaphor. For the samplers, Reichek subverts the moral and religious messages of traditional 18th- and 19th-century samplers by canvassing her friends and family for quotes about their Jewish identity.
The sampler on this postcard has a quote by H.R., "Don't Be Loud. Don't Be Pushy. Don't Talk With Your Hands."
