We Fight to Build a Free World is curated by Jonathan Horowitz, a New York-based artist who for three decades has made work that engages critically with politics and culture. Under his direction, this Jewish Museum exhibition looks at how artists have historically responded to the rise of authoritarianism and xenophobia as well as racism, anti-Semitism, and other forms of bigotry. The exhibition brings together more than 70 voices, ranging from an 18th century portraitist to contemporary artists commissioned for this exhibition, to draw connections between historical oppression and the cultural and political challenges we confront in the world today.

As a component of We Fight to Build a Free World, 36 contemporary artists were commissioned to create designs for political posters, addressing issues of their choice:

Baseera Khan, Cary Leibowitz, Cheyenne Julien, Christine Sun Kim, Edel Rodriguez, Eric J. Garcia, Ernesto Oroza, Frida Orupabo, Guadalupe Maravilla, Guadalupe Rosales, Hương Ngô, Jeffrey Gibson, Jeremy Deller, Judith Bernstein, Katherine Bernhardt, Kay Rosen, Kim Gordon, Lisa Anne Auerbach, Lou Beach, Lynn Hershman Leeson, Marc Hundley, Marcel Dzama, Marilyn Minter, Nicholas Galanin, Pat Phillips, Puppies Puppies, Rico Gatson, Sable Elyse Smith, Sam Falls, Sue Coe, Tabboo!, Tania Bruguera, Tuesday Smillie, Wilhelm Sasnal, Xaviera Simmons, Zohar Lazar
