These limited-edition hand-embroidered challah covers were made exclusively for the Jewish Museum Shop by the Desert Embroidery Project through the Association for the Improvement of Women’s Status Lakia.

The Association for the Improvement of the Status of Women was founded in 1996 as the first Bedouin women's organization in the Negev in Southern Israel. Better known as Desert Embroidery, the Association is committed to advancing the status of women through the education and empowerment of Bedouin women. The Desert Embroidery Project works to bring gainful employment to Bedouin women in Lakia and its surroundings by preserving the folk-art women learned from their mothers and grandmothers.

The Association aims to empower Bedouin women through the improvement of their economic and social status; support the advancement of education in the Bedouin community; and empower the next generation of Bedouin youth through leadership training for community commitment and development.

    Made in Lakia, Israel.
