Besheret Necklace by KANAREK
Price $985.00Members $886.50
Created exclusively for The Jewish Museum Shop is this stunning necklace by Yael Kanarek that spells the Yiddish word "besheret" in Hebrew. Beshert means "meant to be." Each is made in New York City and features a 1pt. diamond accent.
Israeli-American artist Yael Kanarek works with languages. Her exhibition at The Jewish Museum in 2006 featured the innovative netart work Object of Desire (http://www.worldofawe.net/objectofdesire/) that was funded by the Rockefeller New Media grant. The netart narrative engages themes and motives born in the Mediterranean and Middle East in three languages. It was during that time that she created her first text necklace. In 2013, she co-founded Aleph Foundry - a fine jewelry company that specializes in text language.
Coming from new media arts, her jewelry begins with specialized digital making and finishes in the hand of a traditional goldsmith. Bringing old and new ideas and processes together is consistent with her fine art practice.
The jewelry in this selection is created with Gufanit, an original font she created during her year-long fellowship at LABA House of Study at the 14th Street Y. Each letter was carefully designed to meet her vision for the font: a confident, feminine Hebrew font that incorporates serif and san-serif elements, fusing the traditional and contemporary together. Each necklace closes with a signature Aleph that represents Ein-Sof (infinity) and a 1-pt. diamond set into the side face of the pendant to note the commitment and love for language.
