Dutch designer Reineke Otten developed the patterns for her silk scarves using statistical data she compiled from Data.gov and The CIA World Factbook for her project, World Skin Colors. After gathering information on the distribution of skin colors, gross domestic product, number of airports and other factoids from 231 countries, Otten was able to map the world's complexion, wealth and access to air travel in charts and symbols. Based on color palettes created for all 231 countries worldwide and using one dot to represent one percent of each country's population, Otten's maps depict our changing world as a flux of skin tones. Since each country's data is unique, so is the pattern on each corresponding scarf. Each scarf is fittingly packaged in the same cardboard used for archive folders. Made in Italy.
