The pattern of arabesques, flowers and leaves is adapted from a portion of a 16-century synagogue wall from Isfahan, which was the center for this Faience tile mosaic work at that time.  The pattern once decorated the face of a wall housing niches for the Torah scrolls in an Isfahan synagogue. It represents a blend of a Muslim-Persian tradition of architectural decoration with Jewish patronage and function.
