Painted greetings for the Jewish New Year became popular around the turn of the 20th century. Until World War II, many greetings were printed in Germany, whose factories excelled in the chromolithography process used to produce colored images.
Among the types of cards exchanged were flowery pop-ups that were originally created as Valentine's cards. The addition of images of a Jewish biblical figure or a family celebrating a holiday, along with a wish for a Happy New Year, converted these lovely cards for Jewish use.
