Reclaimed: Paintings from the Collection of Jacques Goudstikker presents rarely-seen Old Master paintings collected by Jacques Goudstikker, a prominent Jewish art dealer in Amsterdam prior to World War II. In 1940, Goudstikker was forced to flee war-torn Europe with his wife and infant sone, yet died in a tragic accident while escaping the Nazi invasion. His galley, which contained approximately 1,400 works of art, was looted by Reichsmarschall German Goring. After years of unsuccessful attempts to recover these paintings, his family recently reclaimed 200 paintings from the Dutch government.
The images on these cards were selected by the curator from the exhibition to reflect various aspects of Jacques Goudstikker's life and collection. On the back of each card is a brief explanation of the relevance of the image.
