This piece, designed by Israeli artist Laura Cowan, was inspired by the view of yachts on the ocean in Tel Aviv. Instead of using the traditional silversmithing technique of soldering to join pieces together, Cowan perfected a technique using hidden magnets, so the steel shapes can be moved to change the personality of the piece. Created in high quality, shiny stainless steel, the top pieces are hand curved into gentle waves and attached to the base by hidden neodymium magnets. The bowl is modular and the viewer chooses how to place the waves. It can be used as a fruit bowl, arranging the waves to contain the fruit; as a Chanukiah, subtly hiding the tea lights between pairs of waves; or, used purely as a piece of table sculpture.
Cowan studied silversmithing and jewelry at London Guildhall University and now works from her design studio and workshop in Tel Aviv.
