Artist Marit Meisler's unusual choice of cement creates a functional, contemporary menorah out of a common building material.  It is made of nine separate individual movable pieces that can be arranged in countless configurations, allowing versatility, interaction and imagination to take part in the ceremonial use.  The mirror finish stainless steel for the Hanukkah candle holders stands as contrast to the warm textural quality of the concrete.

Meisler was born in Old Jaffa, Israel. Her father, Frank Meisler, a Judaica artist, works in metals in a traditional figural style. Marit Meisler trained in Industrial Design at Bezalel Academy of Art and Design.  Meisler lives in Israel, where she produces this line of Judaica.  Her work is part of the permanent collection of The Jewish Museum.

This menorah is included in Design Edition JM: a curated selection of modern and contemporary Jewish ritual objects by extraordinary designers commissioned and collected by The Jewish Museum.
