Overview

Porcelain mug featuring an image of Sampler (Paul Tannenbaum) from A Post Colonial Kinderhood, 1993, by artist Elaine Reichek.

In 1993, The Jewish Museum commissioned Reichek to create an installation that explored her personal identity. A Post Colonial Kinderhood, installed in 1994, probed the fears and embarrassments - real or imagined - that still prevail among many American Jews. Reichek began using needlework in her cultural explorations and included samplers in the installation, which reimagined her 1950s Brooklyn childhood bedroom as the work's central metaphor. For the samplers, Reichek subverts the moral and religious messages of traditional 18th- and 19th-century samplers by canvassing her friends and family for quotes about their Jewish identity.

The sampler on this mug has a quote by Paul Tennenbaum, "I never think about being Jewish until I leave New York."

A Post Colonial Kinderhood will be on view at The Jewish Museum from August 23, 2013 through October 10, 2013.
